Have You Always Wanted To Be A Model?

Filed in Behind the scenes | Plus Size Models 2 Comments

I’m so excited about Love Your Body Day!   I get to (judge a modeling contest with Plus Model Mag, Brand, etc  The model wins a contract with Brand and a chance to join ranks of the famous Hips & Curves faces and to have her curves seen by millions of people around the world.)
I can’t wait to meet all of the contests and find out who we’ll do our shoot with.   I love working with sensual, vulnerable, curvy women.  I love how our lingerie looks on soft, feminine bodies.   I love the strength and vulnerability our models show when they get under the lights and stand (or sit or lie down) in the middle of our studio in lingerie, and bare their souls to me, the camera and the world.
What I look for in a model is someone who is totally comfortable in her body.  When she puts on a piece of lingerie she commits to the look and makes it happen.   When she’s wearing our products she can’t be timid or afraid or concerned about how her stomach, hips, arms – whatever – look.  She has to love and accept all of herself – even what she might perceive as her flaws.  She doesn’t just put on a piece of lingerie and pose – she lets who she is come through her eyes, her face, her body and the way she moves.   She gives 100% of herself and doesn’t withhold anything from the photographer or the camera.   She embodies strength and vulnerability.  During a shoot, we give everything we have – and the model has to give everything she has to make it a success.
Being a Hips & Curves model is not for the faint of heart. But it’s a wonderful experience for the brave, daring, sensual – or even the timid, who want to break out of their comfort zone and do something truly incredible.    Our models inspire people to be proud of their curves and their sensuality.  They are role models and powerful examples of embracing their feminine power   I’ve read the emails from customers and seen the faces of the crew during the shoots.  I’ve seen perspectives shift and eyes being opened for the first time. What could be more inspiring than seeing soft curvy figures, moving to the music and being free, confident and amazing?
If you’re curious, excited, confident (or want to be more confident) send us your pics!   Sign up for the contest.

Bud Heavy

I just received a link to this youtube video.  It’s a spoof on a Bud Light ad entitled “Bud Heavy”.  I really felt like I was going to enjoy watching it as soon as the man in the video asked his stick thin girlfriend why she only drinks light beer.  She slaps him after he makes a reference to her being “small boned”.

Cut to a clip of three plus size women.  Although they appear sexy and confident, I can’t figure out if this is a spoof about fat women or a spoof about light beer.  Either way, it left me feeling uneasy.

Check out the video here.  What do you guys think?

Australia’s Next Top Model

Filed in Behind the scenes | Plus Size Models | Pop Culture 5 Comments

Australia’s Next Top Model is searching for contestants, and for the first time is considering the possibility of plus size models for their fifth season.  They follow in the footsteps of America’s Next Top Model, who chose Whitney Thompson as their winner last season. Surely this is in response to the scrutiny that the modeling industry has received about the deaths of rail thin fashion models over the past few years.

Charlotte Dawson, Australia’s Next Top Model judge, who is a modeling veteran herself, says “The only problem I have is that the winner of Australia’s Next Top Model needs to go out immediately and work, and there’s not a lot of plus-sized work available in Australia.”

Who knows, maybe this will spark some interest with designers in Australia, forcing them to reevaluate their offerings and add plus sizes to their collections.

P.S. – I styled Charlotte’s hair for a week last year while Australia’s Next Top Model filmed a couple of episodes in Los Angeles.  She was tons of fun to work with!

Follow Up On The Infamous Janice Episode…

Filed in Behind the scenes | Plus Size Models | Pop Culture 8 Comments

As the makeup artist on the shoot, I got to work behind the scenes, experiencing much of what happened on that day.  Viewers were outraged at the way she treated not only the idea of plus models, but the women who were her clients, from Plus Model Magazine, by offering fruit loops (you know, because fat people eat fruit loops, right??? – I mean, really!)  Some even turned off the television in disgust!

So how shall I put this lightly… or not? Her show does not promote any type of positive body image. In fact, I think that it feeds eating disorders instead.

What did you think?  Is Janice wrong to treat plus size models (and plus size people in general) this way, or is she just running her agency the way any business owner would?

And how about her blog post “I don’t hate fat people, or any people” Do you think she is sincere?

There is a growing re-appreciation of the fuller figured woman on the rise. Whether it is winning America’s Next Top Model, or being the runner up for Miss England, plus models are taking the world by storm. Is this the backlash on how unhealthily skinny, straight size models have become?  Know that real men appreciate a curvier body, one that fills out her plus size lingerie to the brim… but we already knew that!

So ladies, you don’t have to starve yourselves to be beautiful… you already are!

And men, we want to hear from you!  Do you appreciate a curvy woman?
