I was reading one of the lingerie trade magazines on Sunday morning and saw page after page of skinny, boney women in lingerie. This particular publication isn’t always that bad, and to be fair, more and more companies are heading in the direction of “real” women. However this issue was extreme. There was one model that was bone-thin with almost nothing between her skin and her skeleton. The angles of her body were almost freakish as she would thrust out a hip or turn her body at a certain angle. I sat back and thought of all the Rubens paintings and how being round and healthy was considered attractive in sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and how people today, especially in the fashion world, would disagree. They might look at a Ruben and wonder how those voluptuous figures were ever considered attractive or desirable.
I wondered if our kids or grandkids would look back at our old magazines years from now and see the models with protruding hip bones and rib cages and hollow cheeks and be amazed by what we thought was “sexy”. Throughout history the feminine ideal was curvy, fleshy and plump. Now we’re into this skinny = sexy phase, with no room to appreciate the incredibly rich and vast array of differences. Different body types, different shapes, different hair and skins colors.
Whether we like to admit it or not, the media still influences trends and tells us what is “in” and “attractive”. As I was trying to step back and look at these pictures from a totally objective stand point (i.e. an alien landing on Earth and being shown a series of photographs, or someone from the past time-traveling into the future) I wondered, would they pick out these skinny, angular, women as the most attractive? Or would they pick the ones who were rounder and curvier? Of course in my opinion, the fuller figures that are luscious, sensual and soft and feminine would be the obvious choice. But then, it’s hard for me to be objective. I love hips and curves!

We are less than one month away from Valentines Day which means I can begin to plant seeds. My mom taught me how to plant seeds when I was a teenager. Like when I wanted to go out on a date with this cute boy who had his own car. My dad hated that guy, his cocky attitude and little red mustang, but I adored him! I knew my dad would say no so I went to my mom to ask…or in some cases, beg. We both knew my dad would flip a lid so my mom would start planting seeds. Little seeds in casual conversation “Sweetie, Lola is doing so well in school, I’m so proud of her” or “I can’t believe Lola is already 16! She’s practically all grown up!”. During the seed planting phase she would never, ever nag him. Then she would take my Dad out to his favorite restaurant, or bring home a surprise for him and before you knew it, he was totally agreeable! It was like magic! I didn’t really appreciate my mom’s gift until I had to start using it myself.
My honey is an absolute doll but he has no clue when it comes to buying gifts. He knows I love lingerie so I always know to expect it on Valentines Day, but after two years of red lace teddies I knew it was time to start planting. I could never tell him I didn’t like what he picked – it would just crush him. So I would parade around in the ridiculous outfits and pretend to love them. I mean, I know it’s Valentines Day and everything but how much scratchy red lace can one person take?
I usually start planting seeds 2 or 3 weeks before Valentines Day knowing full well that he won’t actually go out to buy anything until the night before. His procrastination explains his odd choices in intimates – he’s probably just picking up whatever’s left! So I start by printing out my favorite pieces from the website and leaving them scattered around the house. I write little notes on them so my master plan isn’t totally obvious. Things like “looked great on fit model!” or “Coral color was amazing!”. I always make sure to leave the style number so he can search for it on the website. To him they are just job related notes but something must happen subconsciously, because he always ends up buying them. And not just one or two. If I print out five styles he always buys all five! He thinks he’s soooo sneaky reading my notes, little does he know
The most important piece of this plan is that I make a huge deal about how much I love the lingerie (and I do, ’cause I picked them!). I make sure to wear them that night and continue to wear them throughout the year. This makes him feel like a rock star – I’ve even heard him helping his friends pick out lingerie for their ladies! He now fancies himself a lingerie connoisseur and I get to expand my lingerie collection. Even though I do feel a little guilty sometimes, we both get to enjoy the purchases, so everyone wins

It was crazy last week – both in our corporate offices and at the warehouse. Halloween is one of our busiest seasons and just as our need for warehouse space has increased, our demand for our amazingly sexy Witch Hat has increased too. In fact the popularity of our hats blew us away. It was utter chaos trying to get more in production in time for Halloween deliveries… in the middle of moving our entire warehouse to a new and larger facility. (Almost twice the size!) We had to figure out how to keep shipping orders during the transition – and keep up the witch hat production to meet the demand. As of yesterday we are happy to report the move is complete and we did it with no down time. We had a few back orders but are pretty much caught up now. Hats off to the warehouse team who have been working 7 days a week to complete this daunting task.
As for the witch hats, we had no idea how popular they would be. This year we wanted to give people the option of creating their own costumes using pretty lingerie they could wear the rest of the year. We know the economy is shaky but people still want and need to have fun. We want to make sure we are giving them value. With lingerie as a foundation, customers can add accessories, hats, wands, boots, riding crops, tiaras, gloves, gauntlets, etc. to create spooky, sexy or innocent personas. Whatever their inner Divas desire! Continue Reading
