Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!  Looks like it’s going to be a bumpy ride.  Yep, it’s true. We are going through a recession. Chances are, most of us are feeling the effects both professionally and personally.  I don’t know anyone who isn’t.  It’s easy to get stuck in fear and depression if we’re not careful.  I’m like a sponge if I listen to news more than five to ten minutes I can buy into the fear.  But does being in a recession mean we can’t be happy and successful?  Looking at the glass as half full, I’m actually kind of excited…. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” right?  Some of our best ideas and most creative outbursts have come when our backs are against the wall.  (We can’t give away any trade secrets but we have some exciting changes happening this year!)

My New Years resolution?  I’m going on a “mental diet.”  I’m not going to deny that our country is going through some major upheavals, but I am going to make a conscious effort to watch my thoughts. Author, James Ray, talks about a recession being like winter.  It may be dark and cold but it’s seasonal and it will pass.  Worrying obsessively, being depressed and miserable won’t make spring come any earlier.  How we choose to see the situation and deal with it can affect our well being and inner peace.  We can use this as a time to grow, to look at our choices, to reconnect with our friends and family.  And eventually spring will come again. The question is, how can we get through this wintry time and keep our sense of peace and optimism and gratitude?  Can we see the beauty in a cold, dark winter night?

We’ve tightened our belts and are being extra careful with our expenses, but I’m happy to say people are still buying lingerie!   The super sexy stuff like corsets  and costumes are really popular right now.  People need a little fun, fantasy and escapism.  Some of the things people are buying aren’t cheap - but we’ve found our customers are looking for ‘value’ rather than ‘cheap’.  The Steel Boned Dutchess Corset came in and went out faster than anything we’d ever seen.   We’re also selling a lot of panties, cotton tanks and Damn Sexy T’s.  We might as well make ourselves comfortable and sexy!    Our country is in for some big changes and a bright future.  We’ve gotta hold on to our hats (or panties) and enjoy the ride!

Thank you for shedding some positive light in a very dark time. I too am tired of hearing sad, frightening news on television. We need to make creative changes to survive this trying time in our history – we can either sit around and wait for something to happen or, we can think outside of the box and MAKE things happen.

Your post was inspiring. Thank you for lifting my spirits.

Thankfully my family and I are not feeling the effects of this wicked economic slow down but I agree with your article – it is very important to watch our thoughts. The media can get the best of us and it’s crucial that we don’t succumb to it.

P.S. I am one of your customers who has spent LOTS of money over the past few months on lingerie. I can give up my daily coffee bean, my weekly massages and those pricey handbags I adore but no woman can give up on dressing herself in pretty undergarments!!

I’m having trouble thinking of ways to have fun without spending my precious cash. Friends want to go to dinner, have drinks and go dancing. I’m starting to rack up my credit card bills again but I can’t seem to help it because I am going stir crazy at home while everyone else is out having fun. Please share some ideas for “fun on a VERY tight budget”!

MichellP – I know exactly what you mean!! I’ve been staying home while my social circle is out in full swing, having the time of their lives while I am scared to death that I am going to get laid off. I work for a large corporation and I know it’s a possibility that I may get cut very soon. However, when I am sitting on home, staring at FaceBook, I see my friends status updates, get invites to events and see people out at a bar drinking in photos, it makes me want to bust out the credit cards and join them.

It’s hard being a young person in an economic turn down. Especially when your friends have money and you don’t! Help!

You guys should post a tip section giving ideas for having fun on a budget. I’ve read some in magazines but they are all pretty lame. I for one don’t feel the need to go into my basement and find my old cooking utensils to throw a fondue party!

Rebecca! What a great and hopeful post. I AGREE with you….the news is disturbing and I just refuse to listen. I have taken up a new mantra whenever someone wants to include me in a conversation about how horrible things are these days….”I refuse to participate!” If the economy is going South…I am not going down with it…well, however, I DO enjoy the South…so perhaps I can take THAT kind of a trip. You are wonderful and your site is as well. Keep up the astounding service that you provide. xoxo Wendy

I think that is a great idea gals! Just for that I think I’m going to begin a new blog post for low-budget, high-fun ideas. :)
