As the makeup artist on the shoot, I got to work behind the scenes, experiencing much of what happened on that day. Viewers were outraged at the way she treated not only the idea of plus models, but the women who were her clients, from Plus Model Magazine, by offering fruit loops (you know, because fat people eat fruit loops, right??? – I mean, really!) Some even turned off the television in disgust!
So how shall I put this lightly… or not? Her show does not promote any type of positive body image. In fact, I think that it feeds eating disorders instead.
What did you think? Is Janice wrong to treat plus size models (and plus size people in general) this way, or is she just running her agency the way any business owner would?
And how about her blog post “I don’t hate fat people, or any people” Do you think she is sincere?

As one of the original BBW models from back in the day (80′s & 90′s – SF & LA) we fought this type of attitude daily. You would hope that she would have evolved, but basically she is staying true to form – Janice lives “back in the day” and is old school. When she was on ANTM she would fight with Tyra about it all the time. There is room for everyone, and as someone who is addicted to $$ you would have thought that she would recognize the market that is out there. There are more chubby women than skinny women – the thing is that chubby women don’t spend the kind of money that the skinny women do. $$ talks – ladies if you want more selection and better representation then put you $$ where your mouth is. Don’t wait for tomorrow to lose weight to buy that cute outfit or sexy lingerie. Do it for you! Looking good is always the best revenge!!
I absolutely abhor shows that romanticize skinny(extremely). There are lots of women out there who are not sticks and love their fabulous figures and their significant others love their figures also.
These agencies, etc. who only want sticks for models better get a grip and face the facts that all women are not skinny and we do have figures.
Janice is PIG, bigot and extremely ugly (on the inside) individual.
I watched every episode until she kicked the plus models out of the house. I was done with the show from that point on. When you consider what the average size in America is…you can’t afford to discriminate. Kimora Lee has even added a plus division to her Baby Phat line. Designers need to wake up!
I’m sorry but that one plus model was a little…crazy? Did she really say she was going to pull out a knife and cut him? Not really the greatest light to put plus size girls in. At least Ivory was quiet and didn’t say much.
I haven’t watched the episode, but she had another thing coming if she thinks that writing a stupid blog will work as a retraction and everything will be ok for her. She has obviously never been humiliated and thinks she is above everyone else in the world. I wish there were some way to bring her down to size and make her see how it feels. Even if she did a show with plus sized models the only reason she would be doing it would be to try and get herself out of the dog house. The show would be fake. I’m not a revengeful person, but I do stick up for what I believe in and for the people who are too scared to stick up for themselves even if I have nothing to do with them. I am a plus sized women. Not because I chose to be, but because I am. I won’t have some snob nosed tight assed little prissy believe she is better then I am or anyother plus sized women just because she thinks she is.
I agree with Jen. I would not be watching the show if it was boring. That said, I still don’t agree with certain comments she made about the plus models. They didn’t have to go overboard with the cereal.
I was watching that episode and I was outraged. I turned it off and I haven’t watched her since. She’s not sincere in what she had to say.
I don’t know, it IS television. You know? If she loved everyone and was nice it would be boring. Come on, you know it’s true.
