What Lies Beneath: Forget the Wedding Dress, It’s the Corset that Counts

Okay, brides-to-be…let’s talk. Most brides believe their wedding dress makes their special day, whether it’s strapless, an A-line silhouette or a princess ball gown layered in yards of beads, satin and lace. Whatever style is “you,” you want to look your best and feel great about your choice.

But once your dress dilemma is solved, you still have to figure out what to put on underneath. You start browsing the endless displays of bras—until it hits you. Why not wear a corset? A plus size corset supports, shapes and enhances an hourglass figure. It also does double duty as a sexy wedding night ensemble.

Wearing a corset used to mean you were laced into place to the point of not being able to breathe. Today this undergarment and its counterparts—the Long-Line Bra, the Basque and the Merry Widow—are sleek, flattering, and don’t make you wait to exhale.

Although corsets with satin ribbons up the back might be pretty on a honeymoon, they are probably not the best choice under a form fitting dress. Ribbons are pretty but can be bulky. Try a long line bra or merry widow with a hook and eye back and save the ribbons for when you and your man are role-playing Big Bad Movie Mogul and Innocent Ingénue on Saturday night!

Check out these six seductive styles, which all have underwire support and are cut low enough to accommodate any neckline:

Ladies, this is SO true. I bought a frilly corset to wear under my dress because I wanted my husband to strip off my gown and see something totally sexy underneath on our wedding night! The corset had a lace trim that showed through the fabric and with the weight of my dress, wearing a heavy corset would have been tortue and I had a SUMMER wedding! I am so glad I tried it on beforehand! I ended up getting the long line bra in the picture above (the shorter looking one) and it was great. Supportive but light enough to not make me sweat the whole night!

What is the difference between a merrywiddow, corset, bustier and long line bra? They all seem the same to me.

From what I understand, a bustier doesn’t lace up like a corset and a corset has strong boning. Merry Widow, Long Line and Basque are the ones I can’t figure out!

Hi, i’m full-figured for sure, and i need to find better support than regular bone bras can give… My back has been aching for years and those fancy “theraputic posture bras” really get uncomfortable after the first 30 minutes or so. Does anyone have a low budget idea that doesn’t involve binding or reductions? I’m only 22!

I have really weird measurements… 54-48-68… I would LOVE a corset but I’m unsure how to go about sizing. I’ve heard to go 2 to 3 inches below the natural waistline… but then I’ve heard 6 to 7 inches below. I’m also a DDD cup so I’m completey befuddled! Unfortunately where I live there aren’t any places to get fitted for a corset so I’m relegated to buying offline… Any advice?

    Thanks :)
